Subject Object brings together thirteen artists’ responses to a shared proposition: the physical object considered as both a subject of representation, and the artwork as an autonomous, individuated surface in its own right. Artists were asked to explore the ambivalent territory between material things and the potential means – traditional or speculative – of their representation through paint or constructed and found forms. The exhibition considers how an object may shift from the categories of self-sufficient thing to that of image or brute materials as it is altered, represented, translated, and reconfigured through different artistic processes. These works approach the matter of materiality from multiple directions, sometimes focusing upon the represented object’s allusive or symbolic force or, at the other end of the spectrum, highlighting the made-ness and thing-ness of the artwork itself. A range of positions in-between these two extremes, or which combine them, can readily be found within many of the works on show.
